Mini Bikes: Various Forms for Different Functions

Mini bikes encompass a lot of forms; they can be racing rides, farm motors or dirt road vehicles. What these forms have in common is that all of them are designed to function in rough terrains and uphill roads.

Mini bikes were first introduced in the United States in 1969 in the form of the Gemini SST 50/80 cc and Maverick which were imported from Taiwan. The production of the bikes was stopped in 1972 due to legal licensing issues with Yamaha. But the vehicle came back and was manufactured by several different motor vehicle companies.

Eventually, the variations of the minis were introduced into the commercial market. Pocket rockets, mini dirt bikes and mini choppers attracted the attention of consumers and the market for minibikes expanded. Pocket rockets are more known for their designs and light weight. These types of mini are designed for racing and extreme sports exhibition activities. The pockets are used by extreme riders to perform blackflips, wheelies and other moves that entertain the crowd and give the rider a different high.

Meanwhile, the old fashioned minibike continued to be manufactured. The models that retained the traditional design were commonly used as farm and ranch vehicles. They are not as flashy or as stylish as their racing counterparts, but they have tougher engines and bigger capacity loads to allow them to perform farm and ranch labor.

Mini choppers and other variations of the minibike are mostly designed for off-road racing, uphill riding and getting through rough and bumpy terrains. Those pocket bikes that are not designed for hard labor or racing have relatively simpler designs and specs. Most of them serve as a vehicle for hobbyists who enjoy mountain trails and hill roads.

The many faces of mini bikes offered in the market allow various groups of people to choose the one that they like best. The changes done on the design of the traditional mini served the purpose of catering to a more diverse consumer base. Now, this vehicle is one of the most popular items among off-road riders and racers and even farmers.
