Motorized scooter and minibike laws
The laws that govern the operation of motorized scooters and bikes vary from state to state. In addition, the enforcement of these laws may vary from city to city. Before selecting a scooter for purchase, we recommend contacting your local law enforcement agency or DMV to obtain the most up to date and accurate information for your area.
Gas Powered Scooter Law in California
California has strict emissions standards which make 99% of all gas powered scooters illegal for sale or use in this state. In addition to local and state regulations for use, a gas powered scooter must comply with California C.A.R.B. Tier 2 exhaust emissions standards for legal sale or use in California.
There is a mandatory sticker applied to all gas powered scooters that will read in one of two ways;
California Compliant Sticker: This engine conforms to 2000 California emissions regulations for small off road engines and EPA PH2 regulations for small non-road engines.
Non-California Compliant Sticker: This product does not conform to C.A.R.B. Tier 2 exhaust emissions standards and is not for use or resale in California for other than closed course competition purposes.
If you live in California, please be aware of this law when selecting a gas powered scooter for purchase. If you live outside of California you may want to purchase a California emissions compliant scooter for other reasons. These scooters are cleaner (less polluting) and not as noisy as non-compliant gas scooters.
