Some Common Misconceptions About Minibikes
Intrigued by minibikes? Or perhaps, you are on your way to buying your first minibike - or pocket bike or mini motos, as they are sometimes called in the market. You may wish to read this in order to learn more about your chosen hobby.
1. Pocket bikes are little more than buffed-up lawnmowers. One may have heard that this particular garden tool and mini motos have the same engine. It's true that lawnmowers' and minibikes' engines are similar, but with one big difference: the minibike's shaft is vertical, while the lawnmower's is horizontal. Some bikes also use a two-stroke motor, which produces smoke and a loud annoying sound if not properly tuned.
2. Pocket bikes don't run. Oh, they can run. In fact, they can race! The first motorized pocket bikes were developed as pit vehicles for racers in the late 1950's. These little babies could maneuver quite well in small pit routes, and are quite portable. Since then people have come up with the idea of creating professional "mini moto" tournaments especially for pocket bike racers.
However, pocket bikes are not exactly free to roam the streets. Because of their small size, as well as the propensity to produce pollutive substances (this can be avoided, though, if the bike were in the hands of an expert mechanic), pocket bikes are deemed unsafe by United States authorities, and therefore they could not be used outside of authorized practice or racing zones.
3. Pocket bikes are a waste of time and money. If you happen to be the penny-pinching type, being a hobbyist of any sort would strike you as a waste of time and money. What you don't know is, you're missing out on a lot! Being a sports hobbyist, and interacting with other people who share your interests, allows you to learn a great many things. It is fulfilling and educational, and for the most part, it costs significantly less than being a collector of full-sized motorcycles or cars does! And when it comes to minibikes, it's mainly about the satisfaction you get from building a unique budget vehicle using your imagination, and even with your own two hands!
